A Journey Begins…

No journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within.

– Lillian Smith

In four days I am leaving the country. Wow. There are piles of clothes on the bed, suitcases in the hallway, and a laundry basket full of everything from pocket knives and bungee cords to “Wine for Dummies” and Polish currency. I have a free recording of Mansfield Park by Jane Austen playing on my ipod, and Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf rests on my nightstand with a blue ribbon marking a page half way through. Just three years ago I stood before the same scene with tears welling up in my eyes. I was headed to Germany for a year, and I had never needed to pack like this before. Now, however, I walk by what looks like a disaster zone, and judge it worthy of only a casual glance. It’s not that I have become a better packer. I admit that, at this moment, my life is out of order. But I also know that, come Wednesday morning, all those little bits and pieces will somehow have found their way into my suitcase. And if I forget something, I will survive. Contrary to what some will tell you, deodorant and floss does exist in other countries. And if you find somewhere where they don’t, it will give you an opportunity to discover the secrets of local hygiene.

But wait! Lest you should lose all hope in my preparedness, I would never leave without a few essentials…

The Essentials

When traveling, ALWAYS bring a good pair of walking shoes. For this journey, I am trying out a pair of Merrell Pace Glove Barefoot shoes. They are great for running (really work the calves), walking around the city, hiking, and going in the water. They are also quite warm, and a pair of wool socks make them great for all seasons. You will also notice my absolute favorite guide book – the Michelin Guide. There are a lot of great guidebooks out there, but for one that will tell you just what you need to know without all the fluff, Michelin is the way to go. (Experienced Michelin Guide users will notice that the name of this blog comes from older editions. If you have no idea what I am talking about, I will explain in a future post).

The suitcases in the hallway are staring me down, so I am off to pack. Send some good thoughts my way, and maybe my clothes will start folding themselves…one can always hope! I’ll be in touch from across the pond – sending stories and travel tips your way!

  1. Safe travels Kelly! A wine tip; they don’t make good wine in England, but they serve fabulous wine at the Tate Modern Museum.
