Fruit of the Month: Dragon Fruit

When I was in high school, a family living down the road from mine painted their doors purple, and the neighborhood divided. Such a vibrant, ostentatious color, some said, did not belong in a respectable neighborhood. Indonesia never got that memo.

Rural Java is full of color: from the green of the fields to the blue of the sky to the purple of every single wall in my house. Buildings are painted in pastels, fabrics dyed with brilliance, and markets filled with flourishing hues. And from this cacophony of color, I bring you this month’s fruit: Dragon Fruit.
